While grease is a standard lubrication mechanism for bearings in a vertical motor application, it can also cause too much friction in the bearings, leading to failure. Although oil mist has never been used in a vertical motor application, a test rig was developed. The rig was designed, fabricated, and underwent minor testing before failure. The new design is still in the process of being implemented.
In 2016, after an inspection led to the discovery of unsafe conditions, the I-beams supporting an agitator above a basin had to be replaced. Stress and moment calculations were used to re-size the beams necessary for this application, which were then fabricated and installed in the field.
