Between the different departments, there are multiple procedures to test the brightness (i.e. the whiteness) of the paper pulp at certain stages. In order to standardize the process to ensure accuracy, numerous tests and procedures were observed. Once a final procedure was developed, it was then implemented and operators were trained. This process helped to make certain the results from each department could be compared accurately.
In the Fiberline unit, wood chips run through a system of high pressure, high heat tanks, where they are bleached using a specific chemical formula. In order to achieve a higher brightness while using as little chemical as possible, many different combinations of chemicals were tested. Once the correct combination of chemicals was chosen, the sequence of chemicals was then tested to obtain the most efficient process.
